The Inn at Yonahlossee

The Inn at Yonahlossee glows in winter snow. The 300-acre North Carolina getaway began as a girls’ camp in the 1920s.

Outdoors and Comfort in Boone, N.C.

This wilderness resort began as a girls’ camp in the 1920s. Developer John Rice initially redesigned it as a tennis center in 1996. The area soon became an equestrian, conference and family getaway.

Bordered on three sides by the Blue Ridge Parkway, the 300-acre property is protected from further development. The creation of an inn, studio cottages and private homes was done with minimum environmental disturbance.

“Families can come and swim, enjoy the trails and our world class Gamekeeper Restaurant, one of the original camp buildings,” says Julie Nicholson, the eight-year manager.

Horseback riding and tennis camps are offered throughout the summer for children. An on-site tennis pro also provides lessons for adults. A pro shop stocks racquets and gear.

The studio cottages contain gas fireplaces, king-sized beds and small kitchens. The welcome center has a complimentary continental breakfast of fruits, cereals, muffins and other nourishing fare.

800-962-1986, 828-963-6400, yonahlossee.com. $99-$435. No smoking.

Children are welcome, pets allowed for a fee. Open year-round; reservations highly recommended. Handicap accessible.
