The Clubhouse Resort B&B

A Tudor Estate in Fieldale, Va.

A windy uphill drive leads to the enchanting Clubhouse Resort B&B. A spacious lawn and woodland along the Smith River, a world-class brown trout stream, are ideal for hiking, cycling and aquatic sports.

In 1917, this famous inn was constructed as the Marshall Field & Co.

Clubhouse, later known as the Fieldcrest Lodge. Mules hooked to dragpans flattened the mountaintop to create the site. The foundation and six fireplaces are comprised of the original stone of the mountain – a survivor of the Chicago Fire, Field ensured that the clay tile walls were fireproof and soundproof.

Owners Joey Arrington, a NASCAR engine builder, and his wife Kathy, fell in love with the 487-acre estate and English Tudor-style dwelling.

In spring 2006, they began operation, hosting dignitaries, celebrities and politicians.

Hearts, clubs and diamonds, carved in the stair railing, lead to seven bedrooms with spade-shaped doorways. A flax wheel, piano and windows enhance the lodging’s classy, cozy stateliness.

After playing tennis or using the fitness room, guests enjoy spa services, billiards or an outdoor heated pool. Country breakfasts include bacon, eggs, biscuits and gravy.

276-226-0526 or 226-0216, TheClubhouseResort.com. $130-$200.
