The first piece Molly Dugger Brennan sent us ran back in 2012, and went to some lengths to explain why she wanted to raise chickens around her Shenandoah Valley homestead and how her husband “Gruff, an educated man,” did not.
His objection, she admitted, was built around the reality that her point to him about “free breakfast!” would actually, once you threw in the costs of coops, feed, heat, etc., be more like “$58.37, not including coffee.”
Made me laugh out loud.

Molly Dugger Brennan is a writer and speaker who lives in the Shenandoah Valley with her husband Patrick and four ridiculously large, rescued dogs. She has many lovely childhood memories of the Blue Ridge mountains, as every family vacation – no matter the intended destination – ended up at Tweetsie Railroad in Blowing Rock. Even the trip to Philadelphia to see the Liberty Bell somehow culminated in the North Carolina mountains.
And she adds this, in a more serious vein:
She hopes to make Blue Ridge Country magazine and especially the retiring Elizabeth Hunter proud as she strives to fill Elizabeth’s well-worn, much-loved, columnist shoes.
