September’s Wild Edible: Paw Paws

Known for its colorful nicknames such as mountain custard, mountain banana, custard apple, and here’s a new appellation…the hipster banana, I would describe Asimina triloba as tasting something like a cross between a banana and a pineapple.
The Hanging Rock Observatory atop Peters Mountain has recorded up to 3,000 hawks and eagles on a fall migration day.

From the photographer: “I’ve been on Rough Ridge Trail when the fog was so thick you couldn’t see your own nose, only to have the wind change direction and give you vista views for miles. Add to this the changing of seasons, varying weather conditions and different angles of light  from the sun and you have something truly magical.”
