Kurt’s Hikes: The Last Dispatch

As I conclude my tenure with Blue Ridge Country magazine, which began with its founding in 1988, I will not conclude the weekly woods walks with The Greatest Day Hiker Of Them All.
Photo is from Emma Gatewood’s second AT hike, in 1957. She is at Lonesome Lake, New Hampshire.

Emma Gatewood’s Walk

Seventy years ago this May, a 67-year-old woman set out from the Georgia mountains in tennis shoes with the goal to walk until she got to Maine, something no other woman had done.
Davis's then-record 2011 hike began at the northern terminus of the trail at Mount Katahdin in Maine. She averaged 47 miles a day.

Trailblazer to Changemaker

Jennifer Pharr Davis is using the same strength that saw her hike the 2,197-mile Appalachian Trail in 46 days to make the world a better place, including relentless Hurricane Helene recovery help in her native Western North Carolina.
“Reaching the quarter-way sign in southwest Virginia was a huge milestone,” says Nikki Bettis (left). “We felt like we’d finally found our groove.”

Family Strong on the AT

In the face of personal, family and business challenges, Nikki Bettis gathered her 13 children, convinced them to walk the Maine-to-Georgia Appalachian Trail and then went out and did it.
