Dorothea Lange, Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California 1936
Dorothea Lange's iconic photo taken in 1936 of a migrant mother in California.
Americans embraced photography in the mid-19th century. Countless millions of photographs later, their fervor has not diminished. This exhibition examines photography in America from the 1880s through the 1980s with an emphasis on the first decades of the 20th century when the medium was changing rapidly. On display are works by some of the most important artists in the history of photography, including Ansel Adams, Margaret Bourke-White, Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz, and Paul Strand. Many of the 24 works are vintage prints and help illustrate the experimental nature and evolution of photographic techniques in the 20th century.
