A day of workshops kicks off the Fiber Festival in the Valley. Friday, May 4, will be a day of adventure and discovery with classes in the fiber arts. Talented artists and teachers will conduct three-hour sessions in a variety of fiber techniques.
Charles Gandy, Master Knitter, author, teacher, designer, is offering two classes – Embellished knitting and a Mini Monster, a fun stuffed toy. Pattie Rollins, experienced in dyeing and spinning, knitting, crocheting and weaving, will present Tunisian Crochet. Virginia Cawood demonstrates English Paper Piecing. She has taught this technique at John C. Campbell as well as other workshops. Silke Cliatt, an art teacher for 30 years turned art quilt creator, will share her knowledge of fiber collage. Becky Walker will share her felting expertise, as she has at John C. Campbell. Participants will create a felted trivet/hot pad. Past guild president Bev Mannes is introducing an out of this world experience using UFOs (Unfinished Objects) to make 12” quilt squares. Finally, there is a use for all that stuff! Libby White, knowledgeable in past and present ways of working with wool fiber, explains needle felting tips to create hanging wool angels.
Join the artisans on Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Enjoy the antics of fiber-bearing animals. Watch demonstrations using fiber. Study heirloom quilts on display in the Heritage Cabin on campus. Roam the booths of amazing crafts. Admission and parking are free. All proceeds help fund the visual arts programs at the Center.
