Blairsville, GA’s Mountain Heritage Festival

Blairsville, Georgia, a few miles north of Vogel State Park and Blood Mountain, is an Appalachian Trail Community.

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy has selected the best towns along the AT to be a model to others on our beloved path.

Blairsville’s efforts to protect, promote and preserve the Appalachian trail are worthy of recognition.

Blairsville — in Union County in northernmost Georgia — is also noteworthy for its Mountain Heritage Festival, held on Labor Day Weekend annually.

Celebrating the region’s rich Appalachian history and culture, the open-air market features local handicrafts including:

• handmade brooms
• candles and soaps
• wood carvings
• pottery and
• honey.

Bluegrass musicians, gospel groups and cloggers will perform during the celebration.  Take time to visit the Civil War camp and the Native American demonstrations.

“Old-ways” games and craft demonstrations of rail/shingle splitting, spinning, quilting are being rescued from oblivion by the artists at the Mountain Heritage Festival.

Come and celebrate with them.

If you’re busy over Labor Day, make time to attend one of the monthly Shape Note Singing practice sessions on the third Thursday of each month at the Courtroom of the Court House at 7:00 PM.  There’s nothing like Shape Note Singing to bring music to your ears and heart.
