WCCA Hosts Literacy Events

The Early Head Start, Head Start, and NC Pre-K Program of Western Carolina Community Action (WCCA) will be hosting parent literacy events throughout the area during the month of December. The events, arranged through the Family Services component of the program, were established to promote family engagement. At the events, parents with children in the program visit the classroom and hear teachers and parents reading to the students followed by interactive art projects related to the stories. In addition, parents are given handouts that explain other ways to help develop their child’s literacy at home including: reading to their children, spending time in conversation, playing language games, providing writing materials, and noticing letters and words in the world around them. Every family is given a book to take home and keep.
