"Hey" Rock
Erica, Aden and Eric on "Hey" Rock
On a pretty Sunday, we made this old-favorite walk with son Eric, Erica and their son Aden, who did his share of leading the way as we went up Tinker Mountain.
At "Hey" Rock--the place where the AT goes out onto an outcrop to look down on Carvins Cove, we paused for a good lunch and detailed inspection of an ant carrying a piece of lichen 10 times his size, as if wanting to be camouflaged. Or was it, as Erica suggested later when she saw another such crawler in another place, a bug with a big fat lichen back?
Soon after starting back down, we crossed Dan Dennison of WDBJ news, who did the piece on The Greatest Day Hiker and me a few weeks back. He was on his way to the real Hay Rock.
U.S. 220 at Daleville south on Appalachian Trail to Carvins Cove overlook point ("Hey" Rock) and back. About 6 miles.
How to get there: Off Exit 150 north of 1-81, with parking just below the Exxon station.
