Maryland’s Savage River Lodge is an escape into the forest.
An aromatic crackling fire greets visitors to the Savage River Lodge, which opened in 1999. Alaska, Canada and the American Northwest leap to mind. Like a 45-acre doughnut hole, the property fits snugly inside Savage River State Forest.
Among the tall hemlocks are 18 cozy cabins. A mini refrigerator, coffeemaker, electric teapot, and gas stove are essential amenities.
“We tried to create a place where people can leave ordinary surroundings and enjoy peace and nature,” says Jan Russell, a former hotel developer and manager.
“People say this is the first time we had to communicate with each other,” says husband, Mike Dreisbach. “They play board games, solve puzzles and spend quiet time.”
Weekdays, steamy muffins and orange juice are delivered to front doors. On weekends a favorite entrée is Eggs Oscar (poached eggs, jumbo lump crab over toasted English muffin and hollandaise).
Elk Ridge NatureWorks instructors teach hikers about local ecology. Fly-fishing, mountain golf, geocaching and other activities are available to visitors.
Certified instructors assist clientele in the cross-country ski shop. The restaurant serves delectable game dishes such as bison, quail, and rainbow trout with fresh Amish-grown vegetables, soups and morels. A corporate meeting room is available for retreats.
“We were blessed because we had a vision,” says Mike, a former labor mediator. “Instead of retiring at 50, we designed, developed, built and managed a heartfelt legacy.”
“Guests become like family,” says Jan.
