The springtimes of boyhood were framed around baseball for me, from playing every day to rooting passionately every day for the hometown Baltimore Orioles.

Come Valentine’s Day, pending the proverbial heavenly willingness and the containment of the proverbial creek, my sweetheart, Gail, and I will return to the trails at Virginia’s Apple Orchard Falls area for the 20th consecutive February 14.

It’s not an original undertaking, but certainly a satisfying and tasty one: Invite work colleagues to test-cook a set of recipes that they then bring into the office for sampling.

They’re a relatively recent phenomenon, rail trails.

As the magazine celebrates 35 years, allow us to thank 35 notables whose key roles helped make the anniversary possible.
