A hero goes to the Hall of Fame.

The superlatives are not the kind we like to see, but they are the ones that the remnants of Hurricane Helene delivered to portions of the southern Appalachians.

We’re about to celebrate one of our favorite things here in our mountain town of Roanoke, Virginia.

Given the goal of a first tomato by the 4th of July and the last at Halloween, there should be, as this is written in nearly August, many weeks of tomato season left.

Her first piece for the magazine was the lead story in our inaugural issue, June/July 1988: “Clean Air, Clean Fuel and Homegrown Plastic.”
