Kurt's Hikes: November 2015
Most of the family, having mostly hiked to Green Goat on Roanoke River Greenway. Far table, from left: Gail, Kurt (not really that short; he’s sitting in a stroller), Carl. Lily, Jen. Standing: Adam, Rachel, Ben. Near table, far side: Aden, Tyler, Eloise, Sarah, Reese. Near side: Matthew, Grayson, Ava, Erica. Foreground: Eric. (At home napping: David, Emily, Watson)
November 8: Appalachian Trail from U.S. 220 to "Hey" Rock and back, 5.6 miles.
A good family walk with sons Eric and Carl and wife Jen, along with grand kids Aden, Matthew, Lily, Grayson and Ava. And a good lunch on the rocks overlooking Carvins Cove.
November 13: Rocky Mount trail off the Skyline Drive to the summit and back, 7 miles.
Between our visits to Harrisonburg to see the great Fred Eaglesmith at Court Square Theater, and to see the always-enjoyable John Gorka at Ashland Coffee & Tea, we stopped along the drive for this good walk and lunch with a view at the summit.
November 22: To the Cascades and back, 4 miles.
Another family trek, as son Eric and his daughter Ava, and daughter-in-law Sarah and her kids Tyler and Reese, along with Carl's son Matthew and daughter Lily headed out on a nearly cold day. Eric, Matthew, Lily and Tyler stopped about a mile in to do some bouldering while the other people went on to the falls. Lunch was back near the climbing site.
November 28: Out the front door, along the Roanoke River Greenway to the Green Goat Restaurant and back, 4 miles.
The cheapest hike of the month was also the most fun, and nearly the whole family made at least part of the walk to the newish restaurant along the greenway, where a good time was had by all, and the hardcores walked all the way back, instead of snagging various cars just outside or along the way.
