Asheville, N.C. based software developer FlickinAmazing Inc. recently launched a GPS enabled guidebook for iPhone and iPad called “The Waterfalls of Western North Carolina.”
The app allows users to search more than 50 Asheville-area waterfalls by name, difficulty, rating and distance from your current location and provides turn-by-turn directions to the trailhead for each trail. Additional features include trail maps that show your current position as you hike and beautiful photos of each waterfall.
"Western North Carolina is one of the most beautiful parts of the country, but many visitors to the area don't realize there are over 200 waterfalls in Transylvania county alone,” says Todd Ransom, President of FlickinAmazing Inc. "These are some of the most spectacular sights in the Southeast, and we want the entire country to be able to appreciate them."
Ransom, who did all of the coding, writing, mapping and photography for the app personally, describes the project as a labor of love.
“It's funny, I actually started out making a rock climbing guidebook, but the photography requirements of the guidebook led me in a different direction,” he says. “I started exploring new areas of Western North Carolina I had never seen before. Before I knew it, I had developed this new passion for finding and photographing all the waterfalls in our area.”
Users of the app can also look forward to future updates, although Ransom is keeping a tight lid on exactly what those may include.
"I am continuing to expand the guidebook with more waterfalls over time," he says. "I also have plans to add some more innovative features, but I'm not ready to talk about that just yet.”
