Along the trails and in the bald areas of Virginia's highest mountains, wild ponies are part of the beauty. No, you're not supposed to feed them and yes, they are monitored for health by park officials.
Our January 2014 hikes were all made in some deference to the weather.
December 21: Chestnut Ridge Loop Trail near Roanoke. 5.4 miles. December 27: Appalachian Trail to McAfee Knob from Va. 311 and back. 7.4 miles.
Mill Mountain Trails (Star, Woodthrush, Ridgeline, Riser, Big Sunny, Mill Mountain Greenway, Watchtower, Star loop); about 5.5 miles
