Well, there are urban hikes and then there are urban hikes. Our usuals – the six or so miles total to and from Tanglewood Mall or downtown Roanoke from our house – are pretty tame and manageable.

Hike: May 5, 2014 Appalachian Trail from Daleville to Carvins Cove viewpoint and back. 5.6 miles.
The gaywings were one highlight of the wildflowers along the AT toward Wilson Creek.
