The area of McCormick and Abbeville Counties was known as the “Calhoun Settlement” or “Lower Long Canes.” Learn of the Lower Long Cane Massacre site where the matriarch of the Calhoun family, Catherine, was killed by the Cherokee. Her son, Patrick, survived and went on to have a son of his own, John C. Calhoun.
