Bold Scapes Exhibition featuring Joseph Cave
to
Art Cellar Gallery 920 Shawneehaw Ln, North Carolina 28604
Bright white clouds, crystal blue skies and an array of brilliant colors cover the linen canvas of artist Joseph Cave. Through the green and orange trees a river emerges and the scene is set. Joseph Cave’s broad brushstrokes and bold colors are what set his paintings apart. Be it landscapes or florals Joseph’s work embodies that of an abstract expressionist, with lines and shadows as his guide. Bold Scapes will be exhibiting at the Art Cellar Gallery August 30 - October 6 with an artist reception Saturday September 1, from 4-6pm.
A native of Columbia, South Carolina Joseph knew at an early age that he wanted to be an artist. Being the only artistic member of his family he sought art classes in middle and high school which eventually led him to choose the University of Georgia for his college education. Cave chose to volunteer for the army and was stationed in Germany in the late 1950s. During leave Joseph would travel to Italy, Spain and France, giving him the opportunity to see all the great art, architecture and museums that he learned about from books and in school.
After three years in the Army Cave was accepted into the San Francisco Art Institute where he received a BFA which was quickly followed by an MFA from San Francisco State University. Joseph met and fell in love with his wife Jessica during this time, who was also an art student. They spent the 1960s in the Bay area where Joseph became an accomplished architect and builder. In 1984 the Caves moved to Portugal, realizing a life long dream of living in Europe. They stayed there until 1989 when they moved to North Carolina where they still live today.
Joseph Cave’s paintings create another world for the viewer. The scenes are familiar, but they are executed in a way that make you stop and look at every mark and color. The thick brushstrokes and intense pigments Cave chooses to use for each painting seem to vibrate right off of the canvas. They invite the viewer in for a closer look and they never disappoint.
