Day of the Dead Fundraiser for Immigrant Rights!
Short Street Cakes, together with COLA- Coalición de Organizaciones Latino-Americanas (soon to be CIMA- Compañeros Inmigrantes de las Montañas en Acción) celebrates the Mexican holiday of El Dia de los Muertos(Day of the Dead) by offering authentic Mexican Sugar Skulls for the November 1st holiday, as well as a community altar for families and individuals to make ofrendas to loved ones who have passed.
On Thursday, October 22nd, from 6-9 pm, an opening reception will be held at 227 Haywood Road. We will offer wine, snacks, and welcome the community to bring items to contribute to building the altar.
Short Street Cakes will make and sell blank and decorated sugar skulls for sale every day between October 22nd and November 1st, and will provide a decoration station stocked with icings, sequins, foil, and glitter for individuals and families to decorate skulls as gifts to their friends and families or in remembrance of their loved ones. On Sunday, November 1st, Short Street Cakes will host open altar hours all day and into the evening.
Sugar skulls will be priced at $5, with half of the proceeds going to benefit COLA- an organization advocating for immigrant’s rights in Western North Carolina (for more information go to www.colawnc.org). Short Street Cakes will also offer a discount to school groups who visit the Cake Shop to learn about the cultural tradition of honoring loved ones and ancestors through the ancient art of altar decoration and decorating skulls.
