The Huntsville Botanical Garden (HBG) has always been a special place for family fun and learning. There will be even more to enjoy, beginning June 2006, when the new Nature Center and Children’s Garden opens.
“Thousands of native North American species of butterflies will fly freely in what is the largest open air butterfly house in the U.S.,” says Sharon Jordan of HBG. The huge Nature Center will be home to frogs, turtles and their water habitat.
The Children’s Garden, a walled two-acre area, includes eight separate gardens including: Space Garden, with a real space station node and aquaponic display; Rainbow Garden, with a small windmill with prism blades – as the mill is cranked, rainbows are created; and Storybook Garden, complete with toadstool seats and a wishing well. Dinosaur Garden, according to Jordan, includes a place where kids can dig for “bones.”
Scheduled to open June 1; check web site for details – www.hsvbg.org – or call 256/830-4447. Hours vary by season.
