Mountain Pies - Not the Apple Kind

It’s gooey and meaty and cheesy. And we just can’t get enough of it, especially if pizza is being served in places like Asheville, Boone and

Crozet. Apparently we could have included a category for best pizza, because it showed up several times in votes for “Best Thing Not On This List.”

The Mellow Mushroom of Boone, N.C., was worth suggesting for its piping-hot specialties, with names like “Kosmic Karma,” “Magical Mystery Tour” and “Ultimate Shroom Pie.”

Another was Crozet Pizza, an eatery in Virginia, where for about 30 years it’s been a family tradition to make pizza, including such toppings as “hot” cherry peppers, black olives and pepperoni.

Making the list, too, is Barley’s Taproom & Pizzeria, located in a renovated 1920s appliance store in Asheville. This outlet is a favorite for its fresh sourdough pizza. But it also serves all kinds of music, plus has 24 taps pouring various craft-brewed beers.
