Remembering Norma Vecellio Lugar, 1934-2010

norma-lugarWe lost a great lover and teller of stories, and a great friend and mentor, in April. Norma Vecellio Lugar, editor of Mountain Homes and senior editor of The Roanoker (BRC's sister magazines), passed away while undergoing treatment for a second bout of cancer. I can still hear her laugh, and half expect her to catch me on my way past her door to look at new pictures of her grandchildren, or answer a question about Facebook.

Norma started working as a journalist when journalism was not a woman's world. Her story on the Hatfields and McCoys in in our March/April '96 issue remains one of our most well-read stories to this day. One of the people she was proudest of was her father, David Vecellio, who with his company built many of the bridges and tunnels on the Blue Ridge Parkway; we published four pages of her photos in our March/April 2010 issue.
